Simple Solutions That Work! Issue 8

60 There are 3 key items that need to be determined once you have decided to purchase an Automated Grinding cell. It is very important to determine these critical items before the machine arrives to allow for a smooth installation. All too often companies do not address these items before the machine arrives. This causes unnecessary delays and cost overruns. 1. LOCATION When deciding upon the location of the new machine you need to concern yourself with the foundation, the floor space, and location relative to you work flow. a. Foundation Most suppliers have a specification for the foundation below the machine. If you do not have the engineering details of the existing floor then you may need to do a core sample to determine the strength. Another thing to keep in mind is floor vibrations. You should make sure that you are not installing a CNC or Robotic machine near large equipment which may be sending vibrations through the foundation. This could cause the machine to lose its accuracy and repeatability. b. Floor Space Make sure that you not only have room for the machine once it is installed but also to allow clear access to move the machine into position. Companies usually do a good job determining the final resting spot for the machine but sometimes overlook the aisle and door ways leading to this position. Remember that the rigging company will need extra clearance for their forklifts. c. Work Flow Some of the main reasons you are investing in automated grinding is to improve throughput, decrease cycle time and reduce WIP. Make sure that you are planning to install the machine where it will be the most efficient. Look at where the work is coming from, how it will be presented to the machine, and where it will be going once it is finished being ground. You may also want to look at how the parts are packaged once they are completed. Can you package directly for shipping or do these parts go on to another machining operation?
