[email protected] Produced in a silicon carbide- alumina composite material, and complimented with an aluminum non-wetting additive, these products have major advantages over those in current general use: • Unlike graphite, the shaft will not oxidize at the metal-air interface • No major dross creation as experienced with silica • The shaft material has roughly 250% the strength of silica, making it much more durable at higher rotation speeds • Tiny pore size limits metal penetration in both heads and shafts, extending product life • The inherent permeability of the material allows head design that can deliver small bubbles, and accurately control their release into the melt • This last property may prove to reduce the need to shear the bubbles and/or reduce the rotation speed required. SUMMARY If we return to the list of criteria for optimum degassing, it is clear that the advanced, high permeability Blasch ceramic material meets the needs: • Bubbles of small size, deliverable in large quantities, under controlled conditions • Components of reasonable strength, easily and economically customized, that are not readily oxidized or attacked by aluminum or the treatment gas The only online publication serving the metalcasting/die casting industry in North & South America provided in both English and Spanish.
